Leveraging Your Payroll Expense Through Coaching

Jordan Goldrich Associate, LCSW, CEAP, HR/OD , CUSTOMatrix, Inc.

Can coaching help your company accomplish more with less during these times of rising energy prices and concern about the economy?  In order to begin to answer this question, ask yourself these questions:

  • If I could accelerate the development of my less experienced leaders and managers, what would this add to the bottom line?
  • Are our new executive and management hires getting up to speed?  Are any in danger of derailing?
  • Do I have valuable, highly driven senior executives who are creating a drain of money, people and productivity because they do not collaborate will with peers and create conflict among employees
  • Do our key managers motivate our top performers and effectively address employees with poor attitude and performance?
  • Do we have a system in place to develop and mentor new managers and leaders so they are ready to step seamlessly into place when a valued person leaves?
  • Would I or my senior team produce better results if we had access to a confidential professional "sounding board" and objective, honest feedback about our business and leadership styles?

Here are five actions your managers can take to improve performance and support development.  They are provided by Jordan Goldrich, Faculty Advisor for The San Diego University Professional Certificate Program in “Coaching for Organizational Excellence.” The program is designed to help senior and middle managers develop coaching skills to enhance employee productivity and business results. Jordan is an Associate with CUSTOMatrix in our Organization Development /Human Resources Practice.

  • Ask employees to come with possible solutions when they ask for help. Ask them to identify the pros and cons for each possible solution and their recommendation.
  • Before implementing a plan that will impact other people, ask them to “shoot holes in the plan.”
  • Make sure employees know what great performance looks like.
  • Listen for and act on opportunities to acknowledge competence and excellence, especially with your top performers.
  • When things go wrong, focus on creating systems to fix what went wrong rather than looking for who is to blame.

Jordan has arranged for clients and friends of CUSTOMatrix™ to receive a 10% discount on tuition for each of the six classes in the San Diego State Program.
